| About the Cartier Santos 100 XL The Cartier Santos was introduced in 1911 and is considered to be the first men’s wristwatch. It was designed by Louis Cartier and named in honour of aviation pioneer Alberto Santos-Dumont, after he wore early prototypes of the watch during his flights. The square case design was unique for the time and the exposed screws around the bezel held the glass in place and were intended to resemble the legs of the Eiffel Tower. Combined with a highly legible dial, it enabled early pilots to quickly read the time in the busy, open-air cockpits of early aeroplanes.
